North Georgia is well know for road cycling, a very popular ride is the Fort Mountain Challenge that this map shows it starting at Cartecay Bike Shop but you may start anywhere along the route and just go. Cartecay Bike Shop also rents out bikes so if you start there then just drop off the bike when you are finished.

Distance : 62.5 miles

Terrain: Rolling mountains and ridges, one steep climb and descent on Fort Mountain; overall, a strenuous ride.

Traffic: Use caution when in any city limits and on all the highways, there are blind curves.

Miles & Directions:

0.0 Start at Cartecay Bike Shop or the public parking downtown. Go south on Old Highway 5. At the traffic roundabout take the fourth exit, staying on Old Highway 5.

1.1 At the traffic light cross Highway 282 near the Dairy Queen.

4.7 Turn right onto Highway 382. Green’s County Store is on the right corner.

14.9 Highway 382 ends; turn right onto Highway 136.

20.2 Turn right at the green sign for Lake Recreation Area. There may not be a street sign.

26.4Turn right onto US76.Highway 282 East; use caution this is a busy windy road.

26.9 Turn left onto Dennis Mill Road.

29.6 Turn right onto Old Federal Highway.

34.7 Turn right onto Highway 52 (old 76) back to Ellijay. There is a store here, start climbing.

41.8 Turn left into Fort Mountain Park, if interested.

42.2 Main climb, King of the Mountain, begins Fort Mountain.

The Red asterick is where we are located.

44.7 Downhill. 4 Miles – Use caution, watch your speed!

58.5 Arrive in Ellihay.

61.5 Turn right onto First Avenue.

62.5 Arrive at the Bike Shop

Our owner, Robert enjoys road cycling a few times a week, he does not do the full Fort Mountain Challenge but he goes from our office to the roundabout in Ellijay, but he does take back roads.

He starts out at The Overlook Inn

5.2 miles to Pleasant Hill Rd

2.1 miles to Mountaintown Rd

2.6 Miles to Craigtown Rd

4.1 Miles to Chatsworth Highway

3.0 To roundabout Downtown Ellijay

Robert always welcomes anyone that would like to join him on this beautiful ride. Just ask.

Here are a few pictures from his ride.

On the third weekend in September, the War Between The States Day in Chickamauga transports visitors back to 1863. Reenactors come from all over the country outfitted in authentic union and confederate uniforms and set up camp in front of the Gordon Lee Mansion. Visitors get a glimpse of what the area was like when the Civil War came to this part of the country. The Battle of Chickamauga got it’s name from the nearby Chickamauga Creek and was the last great Southern victory. Much of the battle took place a short distance to the North in an area that is now designated as the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park – the first and the largest in the country. Both armies suffered greatly. Casualty estimates were 18,000 Confederate and 16,000 Union soldiers. The War Between the States Day in Chickamauga commemorates the sacrifice that these soldiers made at that turbulent time in our country’s history.

Reenactors will be exhibiting living history activities throughout the day in front of the Gordon Lee Mansion and Crawfish springs areas including encampments, marching, cooking and cannon demonstrations. In addition to the all day living history events, sutlers and craft vendors are also there so that visitors can browse and maybe take home a piece of history. Other activities will also be taking place at nearby areas including the Lee and Gordon’s Mill and the Chickamauga Coke Ovens Park. Come visit the War Between The States Day on the third weekend in September and step back in time to a brief but monumental time in our country’s history.
